The International Society of Participatory Mapping (ISPM)
http://pmappingsociety.orgis an association of like-minded scholars,
practitioners, and activists who are invested in the integrity and accuracy
of participatory mapping and data collection, as well as, the equitable
distribution of knowledge between the global socio-economic divides. To
ensure that geospatial data, tools, and knowledge remain free and open to
those in the Global South, ISPM members commit their membership dues to
helping foster intercultural and educational events and travel grants for
those normally unable to participate in international events, conferences,
and exchanges.

We are looking for practitioners, developers, and academics interested in
participatory mapping that want to lead our Society. Our Executive
Committee and Advisers
http://landscapevalues.org/ispm/executive-board-and-special-advisors/ serve
four year volunteer positions to coordinate our bi-annual conference and
other workshops, manage our website and blog, conduct research on
participatory methods, and reviews on software. We meet over video
conferences once a month and are expected to commit 5 hours a month.

The Society’s objectives are to encourage and support the development,
experimentation, evaluation, and application of participatory mapping
methods globally in order to foster interaction and research in this
scientific field, and to coordinate with other organizations in the study
of participatory processes, mapping, and quantitative analyses. The Society
places a strong emphasis on fostering opportunities between the Global
North and South in order to promote a more equal distribution of knowledge
and resources.

These purposes are to be carried out by:

  • Facilitating communications,

Providing academic assistance with ideas, methods, and contacts,

Sponsoring international conferences for the exchange of ideas and
dissemination of results,

Encouraging special purpose workshops and student knowledge exchanges,

Publishing the electronic newsletter, and

  • Encouraging an environment of international colleagueship and
    friendship across the globe.
